How to Apply for Your IRS Security PIN: Step by Step


1. Create an Account with the IRS

Before obtaining your IP PIN, you must register in the IRS identity verification system. Follow these steps:


  • Go to the official IRS portal: www.irs.gov

  • Navigate to the "Get an IP PIN" section.

  • Create an account by verifying your identity with personal and financial information (credit card, auto loan, or mortgage).


2. Obtain Your PIN Electronically

  • Once authenticated, the system will assign you a six-digit PIN.

  • This PIN changes every year and can only be obtained online or through IRS notification.

  • Write down and store your IP PIN in a secure place, as you will need it when filing your taxes.


3. Alternative: Obtain It by Mail

If you cannot access it online, you can also request it by mail:


  • Complete the IRS Form 15227 if your annual income is below $73,000.

  • Call 800-908-4490 to verify your identity with an IRS agent.

  • If you qualify, you will receive your IP PIN by mail in approximately three weeks.


4. Use Your IP PIN Correctly

When filing your taxes:


  • Enter the six-digit code in the tax return form.
